Protecting Jobs for Domestic workers
We live in an era of Information and Knowledge sharing; for an economy to grow, we need to attract skilled labour, even if it means migrants from different countries. By stopping skilled immigrants from entering the country means further suppressing growth of the economy. Now, the reason which has prompted Governments to do such a thing is to protect jobs for domestic workers. According to me, the measures announced could only act as a stop-gap solution and for longer term following vital points need to addressed by the Government:
- Improve education systems so that locals don’t fear competition from migrants.
- Getting benefits from the Government should be based on contributions made to the society/organisations and not a right of becoming the citizen of the country. The Government needs to enforce a sense of responsiblity in the minds of citizens, rather than they having a laid back attitude and depending on Benefits.
- Identify areas where there is shortage of labour, encourage setting up for training courses for locals.
- Citizens living on Government Benefits, those who have lost their jobs must be councilled to take up new learnings and set targets to ultimately fill in one of the available shortage areas.
Instead of finding a lasting solution for the on-going economic problems, the U.S. Senate unfortunately voted on Feb. 6 to restrict banks and other financial institutions that receive taxpayer bailout money from hiring high-skilled immigrants on temporary work permits known as H-1B visas.
Jacqui Smith, the Home Secretary of United Kingdom followed with measures to raise the bar for foreign workers wishing to enter the United Kingdom, and to give domestic workers a greater chance of applying first for United Kingdom jobs.
